What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A tornado tracked to the north-northeast for nearly 3 miles and lifted about 1 mile east-southeast of Lake George by 1003 am CDT. Numerous large trees were knocked down or uprooted across Schoolcraft Lake Road and along county road 4. Peak wind speeds were estimated at 105 mph with a maximum width of 150 yards.

The wider storm

A vertically stacked cold-core low pressure system moved into the Red River Valley and brought ideal conditions for low topped mini supercells. A negatively tilted 500 mb trough, diffluent height field, and a strong upper level disturbance were all present. At the surface, there was even a warm front east of the low, toward Hubbard and Wadena Counties.

Began near Lake George (47.1600, -94.9900).
