Event narrative

Riverwatch initially reported impounded water had flooded one home and was threatening others prompting a flood advisory which would be upgraded to a Flood Warning on 5/7/24 at 7:39am. Riverwatch team would send an updated report that Tuluksak was flooding from a few sides: water flowing into ponds and sloughs from the upstream, from Canaaq & Michevik slough water inundating water into most shoreward sides of the village from the east, and from downstream tundra flooding). Some of Tuluksak's flood impacts included: the airstrip was 1-2 ft from water on deck, the village lost their water treatment plant and the village dump was flooded.

Wider weather episode

Ice jam flooding along the Kuskokwim River moved through the lower areas of the basin beginning May 2 and continuing though May 14 for several communities along the Kuskokwim River. Flood watches were issued starting May 2 for the upper reach of the Kuskokwim River zone, progressing downstream ahead of flooding through May 12. Ice jam flooding moved slowly downstream based on river ice concentration and temperatures, with impacts varying depending on the residence time of the jam below a community and amount of impounded water.
