The wider storm
The area started off in the warm sector with an approaching cold front and pre-frontal trough from the west. Diurnal heating led to destabilization, with SBCAPE values reaching 2000-3000 J/kg. Thunderstorms fired up along the approaching pre-frontal trough and moved into the area. Given 40 knots of deep-layer shear, some storms were able to organize and become severe. The storms produced damaging winds across southeast NY.
Began near Lake Mahopac (41.3700, -73.7300).
