The combination of a digging mid-level trough supported by a shortwave served as the forcing mechanism for thunderstorms across the Upstate of South Carolina. Strong to severe thunderstorms moved into the Northwestern Midlands during the evening hours resulting in areas of wind damage, especially across Newberry and Fairfield counties.
