Event narrative

A wind gust of 69 mph from a thunderstorm downburst was observed at the Roswell Air Center.

Wider weather episode

A strong upper level high pressure system that was over New Mexico the prior days moved east over Texas and Oklahoma on August 22nd. This allowed more monsoon moisture to enter New Mexico leading to the development of showers and storms across parts of the state. One thunderstorm brought severe downburst winds to the Roswell Air Center briefly cooling temperatures in town before heating back up to around 100 degrees later in the afternoon.
