Event narrative

A thunderstorm moving over the city of Montrose late in the afternoon of the 24th produced strong to severe wind gusts, including one gust to 70 mph. This gust was recorded at the KMTJ ASOS at Montrose Regional Airport at 6:50 PM MDT. Damage was associated with this storm, with reports of several large tree limbs blown down.

Wider weather episode

Lingering moisture after a monsoonal/post-tropical moisture surge combined with some enhanced instability and lift from a passing shortwave to produce scattered to widespread convection across eastern Utah and western Colorado. Drying surface levels allowed for some enhancement of outflow winds from showers and storms as falling precipitation evaporated before reaching the ground.
