Flash Flood — Wright, Iowa

2024-07-07 to 2024-07-08 · near Eagle Grove, Wright, Iowa

Event narrative

Highway 17 just south of Eagle Grove with an estimated 3 feet of water depth based on water up to the grill of a sheriff truck.

Wider weather episode

Following showers and thunderstorms over Iowa during the morning hours with a passing shortwave, an additional shortwave arriving in the Central Plains with the aid of increased lift and MUCAPE values around 1000 J/kg overhead brought another round of scattered showers and storms into the afternoon and evening hours. These multiple rounds of convection, along with the slow-moving nature of some storms led to heavy rainfall and eventually flash flooding, particularly over Wright county. Reports of flooded roads and rainfall totals averaging between 3-5 inches were common. Severe wind was also reported in Adair county.
