The KDYT AWOS at Sky Harbor Airport in Duluth, MN, reported a peak wind gust of 53 mph associated with a thunderstorm gust front traveling through the Twin Ports. Peak winds to 40 mph continued through the 5:55 pm CDT observation.
Wider weather episode
Very warm and humid conditions ahead of a cold front moving into the Northland on the afternoon of the 31st led to the development of thunderstorms. These storms went on to produce damaging wind gusts that led to widespread reports of trees and power lines down across northeastern Minnesota during the late afternoon and early evening hours. As the storms crossed western Lake Superior, they produced gusts as high as 53 mph at the Duluth Sky Harbor Airport.
