Port Wing weather station PNGW3 observed a 42 mph wind as a gust front traveled over the nearshore waters and coastal land areas of western Lake Superior.

Very warm and humid conditions ahead of a cold front moving into the Northland on the afternoon of the 31st led to the development of thunderstorms. These storms went on to produce damaging wind gusts that led to widespread reports of trees and power lines down across northeastern Minnesota during the late afternoon and early evening hours. As the storms crossed western Lake Superior, they produced gusts as high as 53 mph at the Duluth Sky Harbor Airport.
