Event narrative

The Burke Lakefront Airport ASOS in Cleveland recorded a peak convective wind gust of 62-mph from a thunderstorm.

Wider weather episode

Lake Erie resided in the warm and moist sector along the northwestern flank of the Bermuda-Azores subtropical high pressure ridge during the early evening of the 17th through early evening of the 18th. Simultaneously, a surface front, oriented from northeast to southwest, remained nearly-stationary across the Upper Midwest. Isolated multicell thunderstorms developed and persisted eastward across western Lake Erie during the early evening of the 17th and generated gale-force peak convective wind gusts along the northwest OH shore. During the early to mid-afternoon of the 18th, scattered multicell thunderstorms developed and persisted generally eastward over and near central and eastern portions of Lake Erie. These storms generated peak convective wind gusts of gale-force to storm-force along the northeast OH shore. All of these storms occurred in an ambient environment with moderate to strong MUCAPE and DCAPE, respectively, and moderate effective bulk shear.
