What the National Weather Service wrote

An off-duty NWS employee estimated wind gusts of 60-70 mph 10 miles west of Gage.

The wider storm

An upper trough was moving east of the Rockies with deep, dry air moving into southwest New Mexico behind it. There was some deeper moisture up to the Rio Grande Valley with an area of convergence west of Deming. Storms developed along this area of convergence which produced severe wind gusts and in turn a dust storm that moved along Interstate 10 in Luna county as well as around Las Cruces.
