Wider weather episode

Despite abnormally dry to drought conditions across central Indiana, following two weeks with no rain for most locations; dewpoints climbing to around 70 degrees on the 20th promoted scattered evening showers and thunderstorms with embedded isolated microbursts.

Synoptically, the broad subtropical upper ridge which had been suppressed south for much of the month, returned northward into the Midwest, with moderate south-southwesterly breezes increasing humidity and precipitable water values. A boundary slowly crossing northwestern Indiana initiated convection. Showers and storms with locally heavy downpours crossed the region, with damaging micobursts from the two strongest cells: first late-day in south-central Howard County, and then later in the evening over south-central Marion County.
