High Wind — Snowy and Judith Mountains, Montana
2024-08-29 · Snowy and Judith Mountains, Montana
Event narrative
RAWS station JPKM8 Judith Peak measured a 60 mph gust.
Wider weather episode
An upper level wave brought a cold front and associated stronger winds aloft to the region the evening of the 27th through the early morning on the 29th. After the front, a pressure gradient developed along the Rocky Mountain Front that helped keep stronger winds going into the 28th, which prompted High Wind Warnings. A few rouge strong wind gusts were observed across the plains east of the warning into the 29th, but were too few and far in between to warrant widespread High Wind Warnings. Additionally, snow level dropped just enough to result in a period of heavy snow at Logan Pass behind the front on the 28th.
