Afternoon and evening heat indices ranged from 100 to 110 degrees with a maximum heat index of 110 degrees a personal weather station near Madison, 109 degrees at a personal weather station in Wentworth, and 106 degrees at the Automated Weather Observing System site in Madison.
Wider weather episode
Very warm temperatures with highs in the lower to mid 90s paired with oppressive dew point readings in the upper 70s to lower 80s produced afternoon and evening heat indices generally from 100 to 120 degrees with little overnight recovery. The most widespread oppressive conditions occurred during the afternoon and evening on July 13, with a secondary peak of heat across far southeast South Dakota on July 15.
