Afternoon and evening heat indices ranged from 100 to 109 degrees with a maximum heat index of 109 degrees at a personal weather station near Winfred and 103 degrees at the South Dakota Road Weather Information System site near Howard.

Very warm temperatures with highs in the lower to mid 90s paired with oppressive dew point readings in the upper 70s to lower 80s produced afternoon and evening heat indices generally from 100 to 120 degrees with little overnight recovery. The most widespread oppressive conditions occurred during the afternoon and evening on July 13, with a secondary peak of heat across far southeast South Dakota on July 15.
