Wider weather episode

For the second day in a row, a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) crossed western and central New York during the afternoon on July 16, 2024. Much like the day before, partly to mostly sunny skies ahead of the system increased instability across portions of the Buffalo forecast area. The primary difference with the MCV that occurred on this day, was the timing of the track of the system. The MCV moved through similar areas as the day before, but it was around four hours earlier in the day. This resulted in less instability over the western New York area, compared to the previous day.

While there was some wind damage with this event across portions of western New York, the extent of the damage was much less than the previous day for these areas. Most of the damage with this event occurred from Rochester and points east, but the vast majority of the damage was in central and north central New York. A downburst in Jefferson County caused the most damage with maximum estimated winds to 80 MPH.
