2024-08-26 · near De Smet, Kingsbury, South Dakota
Event narrative
Thunderstorm winds blew the top off a grain bin, which was secured with large bolts.
Wider weather episode
Scattered thunderstorms, spurred by a ridge-rider mid-level wave across North Dakota, formed generally near a weak surface convergence boundary across far northern Nebraska and southeast South Dakota and a surface front over central and northeastern South Dakota. The storms weakened before moving too far eastward due to a strong thermal cap, but this warm and drier layer allowed storms to briefly produce some stronger winds east of the James River.
