The end of July heat event continued through midday on August 1st, at which point a line of storms moved through the I-64 corridor, resulting in cooler and drier conditions afterwards. Isolated storms developed late afternoon into the evening. The highest heat indices on the 1st in Southern Illinois were 112F observations at the Crab Orchard RAWS site, the Dixon Springs RAWS site, and the Cairo Regional Airport AWOS. Some counties reached excessive heat warning criteria by meeting heat advisory criteria 4 consecutive days.
