The ASOS Station located at the Lac Qui Parle county airport near Madison recorded a cold wind chill temperature of -27 degrees.

Wider weather episode

A strong winter storm impacted central and southern MN the day prior with snow, strong gusty winds, and frigid temperatures. Cold air trailing behind this system remained in place across the region during early pre-dawn hours of January 15th. Wind chills fell to -25 to near -40 degrees below across portions of western MN.

The coldest wind chills were observed in extreme western MN near Morris, Glenwood, and Alexandria with -35 to -37 degrees below zero.
