Wider weather episode
A strong cut off low pressure system near the four-corners region generated extreme rainfall over eastern New Mexico from the 19th through the 20th. On the 21st, this system started to become absorbed back into the general flow of the atmosphere. As this occurred, the cut off low became an open wave trough moving over West Texas early in the morning on the 21st. Significant elevated instability brought scattered thunderstorms to the area early on the 21st. One of these storms produced severe hail and damaging winds near Needmore (Bailey County).
