Mesonet site XGRS at the Fire Island Coast Guard measured a 44 knot wind gust.
Wider weather episode
A slow moving cold front approached from the north at the surface while a well-defined shortwave trough approached aloft. With a very moist airmass in place ahead of the cold front, some thunderstorms that developed became severe and produced damaging wind gusts.
