Event narrative

Hail with diameters ranging from quarter size to golf ball size was reported by law enforcement.

Wider weather episode

An upper level low pressure over northeast Colorado early Monday morning lifted eastward, with a surface reflected cold front that tracked across western Kansas though the day. Showers and some thunderstorms were associated with the cold front during the morning, and by afternoon the atmosphere ahead of the front allowed thunderstorms to become more robust, with a few sub criteria hail reports. A particularly strong thunderstorm produced golf ball hailstorms in Barber county, KS in the early afternoon. Subsequent to the hailstorm in Barber county, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for parts of central a west central Kansas, however additional updrafts in the Dodge City forecast area struggled to become mature thunderstorms.
