Event narrative

The Coast Guard received a report about six people on an overdue boat near Bodega Bay at 11:40 PM Saturday from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. The boaters departed Westside Marina on a 21-foot long blue and white vessel at 3 PM and were expected back by 7 PM. A 13-year old boy was found alive off South Salmon Creek Beach at 8 AM on Sunday, with an older boy found dead around 10:15 AM. The search was suspended around 6:30 PM pending new information.

Wind gusts at the Bodega Bay buoy (46013) reached around 27 knots during the afternoon and evening of Saturday the 2nd. Significant wave heights were 8 to 9.5 feet from the west-northwest.

Wider weather episode

Strong swell waves in the eastern Pacific resulted in two fatal boating accidents in the waters off the North Bay.
