Event narrative

Broadcast media reported that a 16-year-old boy was killed by lightning after being struck while riding a bicycle in the 600 block of SW 67th Avenue in Pembroke Pines during a thunderstorm. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Time is approximate and is based on the timing of a severe thunderstorm that was affecting the area at the time, as well as from National Lightning Detection Network data showing several cloud-to-ground strikes in close proximity.

Wider weather episode

With a mid-level trough over the Florida Peninsula, and a stationary front positioned over Central Florida, plentiful moisture and instability was in place over South Florida. This resulted in numerous showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening of September 18th across South Florida.
