Event narrative

A large portion of a tree was blown down onto power lines at the intersection of West Park St and North Walnut St in Du Quoin.

Wider weather episode

The remnants of Hurricane Helene made their way through the Quad State region with heavy rainfall in Southern Illinois of 3 to 6 inches with the highest totals located in the southeastern counties: Saline, Gallatin, and Hardin. Despite the high rainfall totals, hourly rainfall rates remained low enough to keep flooding issues from developing. Several strong wind gusts of 40+ mph were observed and tree damage was reported as saturated soils made trees more susceptible.
