Event narrative

A man (81m, direct) died as a result of a tree falling onto him while he was sitting in his house located off of County Rd 1675 W northeast of Griffin, IN. A combination of heavy rain and 40-45 mph wind gusts from the remnants of Hurricane Helene helped to knock down the tree.

Wider weather episode

The remnants of Hurricane Helene made their way through the Quad State region with heavy rainfall in Southwest Indiana of 3 to 5 inches. Despite the high rainfall totals, hourly rainfall rates remained low enough to keep flooding issues from developing. Several strong wind gusts of 40+ mph were observed and tree damage was reported as saturated soils made trees more susceptible. Unfortunately, a tree fell onto a person inside a house northeast of Griffin, IN resulting in one fatality (81m, direct).
