Event narrative

Maximum sustained winds over the nearshore waters off Miami-Dade and Broward Counties were in the 35 to 40 knot range. A peak wind gust of 56 knots / 65 mph was recorded at the Government Cut mesonet station, with a peak wind gust of 49 knots / 56 mph at Port Everglades mesonet station.

Wider weather episode

The center of Hurricane Helene passed about 200 miles west of Naples as a Category 3 hurricane moving N-NE over the eastern Gulf of Mexico around midday on Thursday, September 26th, then made landfall later that evening in the Florida Big Bend as a Category 4 hurricane. The large wind field around Helene and associated outer bands brought tropical storm force winds and gusts to the immediate Atlantic and Biscayne Bay coasts as well as Lake Okeechobee.
