Event narrative

Helene's expansive wind field produced a period of tropical storm conditions, especially in gusts, over the offshore waters of Brevard County. A National Data Buoy Center buoy 20 nm east of Port Canaveral, Station 41009, measured a maximum sustained wind of 35 knots, peak wind gust of 51 knots and seas up to 12.5 feet. A Scripps Institution of Oceanography buoy just east of Port Canaveral, Station 41113, measured seas up to 11 feet.

Wider weather episode

Major Hurricane Helene paralleled the west coast of Florida before making landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida near the city of Perry. The system's expansive wind field produced tropical storm conditions across much of east central Florida including its adjacent coastal waters.
