The wider storm

A potent upper level low trailing behind a strong cold front brought the first notable surge of cold air for the winter season. The gusty northwest wind brought upslope snow showers for the western North Carolina mountains to produce the first considerable accumulations for the higher elevations of Ashe and Watauga counties.
