Drought — Collingsworth, Texas

2024-10-01 to 2024-10-31 · Collingsworth, Texas

Event narrative

The far southeastern corner of Donley County into the southeastern third of Collingsworth County started the month of October in Severe Drought (D2). There was a small area of Extreme Drought (D3) in the far southeastern corner of Collingsworth County. By mid month, the extended dry conditions allowed the area of D3 to grow, taking over much of the southeastern third to half of Collingsworth County and even the far southeastern corner of Donley County. The area of D2 only spread to the northwest ever so slightly. By month's end just over 50% of Collingsworth County was in D3 with the rest of the northeastern parts of the county in D2. At the same time D2 grew to over take much of the southeastern half of Donley and even a portion of southern Wheeler County. With no rain during the month the rainfall deficit grew by almost 2.

Wider weather episode

October 2024 was the hottest October on record across the Texas Panhandle. These hot temperatures, some of which were daily record highs, along with near zero precipitation across an already dry region exacerbated overall drought conditions. Overall rainfall deficits grew by 1.5 to 2 inches.
