Event narrative

A 59 mph non-thunderstorm wind gust was reported at the KLAF airport at 2052 EST.

Wider weather episode

An arctic cold front passed through central Indiana during the late evening hours of December 4th with strong gradient winds amid and immediately following a rather narrow band of rain that quickly transitioned to snow. Wind gusts generally peaked in the 40-55 mph range across most of the region, but a few locations reported gusts as high as 64 mph. The winds produced sporadic power outages with peak outages over 30,000, but most were resolved by the morning of the 5th. The strong to severe wind also combined with the burst of snow to briefly reduce visibility, causing minor travel impacts, primarily from southeast of Lafayette to areas between Indianapolis and Muncie.
