Winter Weather — Spencer, Indiana

2024-11-30 · Spencer, Indiana

Wider weather episode

Light to moderate snow overspread the area during the afternoon hours on the 30th, as a clipper system moved through. A localized band of heavier snow developed that night along Interstate 64, causing reduced visibility below 1 mile. Snowfall rates between 0.5 to 1.0 inch per hour had occurred through the night, causing snow accumulations between 3 to 4 inches across portions of Southern Gibson, Northeast Posey, Northern Vanderburgh, and Northwest Warrick counties. Outside the snow band, a sharp cut off resulted in only 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation across most of Southwest Indiana. Snow initially was confined to grassy and elevated surfaces, but a combination of nightfall and heavier intensity eventually overcame warm pavement temperatures. Temperatures initially near 32 to 34 degrees fell into the 20s that night. This led to treacherous conditions from patches of black ice on I-69, I-64 and US-41, causing over a dozen accidents along with injuries. The lack of sunlight prior to the event caused roadway treatment to not be as effective. Multiple slide offs had occurred on I-69 in Vanderburgh County. A Nissan Altima crashed on I-69 near the 25 mile marker in Gibson County. Snow continued into the early morning hours of December. Key Impacts: transportation delays, traffic accidents.
