Hailstones were fused together, some the size of a golf ball.

A closed low pressure center set-up over the desert southwest. The seasonality of it created cold enough temperatures for heavy snow over the mountains, but the position of the low at this point of the year created a sufficient enough atmosphere for severe thunderstorms over the eastern plains.
