Event narrative
Public reports shared that snow began to accumulate out the road in Juneau at around 9pm on the 17th with 6 inches measured in the daybreak morning by multiple sources and RWIS webcams. A vehicle accident caused a large power outage for out the road and Auke Bay as reported by the local power company. Total accumulations of 8 inches were later reported near Tee Harbor. DOT later reported over 100 trees came down along the highway north of mile marker 30 from this event due to heavy wet snow and the ground not yet frozen.
Wider weather episode
Cold air and overrunning moisture allowed for the first snows of the year for the Northern Inner Channels on the 17th. The cold air then to pushed farther south down Lynn Canal, causing snow for out the road in Juneau.
