Heavy Snow — Northern Foothills, South Dakota

2024-12-30 · Northern Foothills, South Dakota

Wider weather episode

A passing cold front and upper-level shortwave brought gusty northwest winds and colder air to the area. The gusty winds and moisture in place helped to produce a prolonged period of heavy upslope snowfall during the morning and afternoon hours across the northern Black Hills and foothills. Amounts of 6 to around 12 inches were common across the northern slopes of the Black Hills into the higher foothills. Amounts of 2 to around 6 inches fell over the rest of the northern Black Hills and northern foothills into portions of the west central South Dakota plains. The heavy snow impacted travel across the northern Black Hills area during the daytime and evening hours.
