Visibility of one eighth of a mile was reported in Merced and Madera. Webcams indicated visibility below 1000 feet in Merced and Madera.

Wider weather episode

A dry offshore flow followed by a surge of cooler air kept the San Joaquin Valley free of fog for around a week, but the airmass moderated, and with clear skies and light winds prevailing, areas of dense fog developed along and west of the SR 99 corridor during the morning of January 18. The fog lifted into a low cloud deck by late morning and completely dissipated by early afternoon.
