Overnight low temperatures fell to between -15 F and -20 F across Dawes County from 1/20 into 1/21, with daytime highs generally remaining under 5 F during the afternoon on 1/20. The cold temperatures combined with gusty winds resulted in a prolonged period of extreme wind chills under -30 F. Minimum observed wind chill values reached -33 F at the Chadron Airport ASOS (5 miles W of Chadron) at 5:10 AM MST on 1/20.
