A dry airmass built into the area from a northerly flow as high pressure built inland into California during the evening of January 20 and the early morning of January 21. With clear skies and light winds prevailing over the San Joaquin Valley, temperatures dropped below the freezing mark at many locations during the morning of January 21. With the airmass remaining stagnant, temperatures dropped below the freezing mark across much of the valley again each morning through January 24.
