A disturbance aloft moved across far east and southeast Montana during the early morning and afternoon hours of the 15th bringing scattered rain showers across the area due to the mild temperatures. However, surface temperatures were at or slightly below freezing. This resulted in a period of freezing rain during the early morning hours lasting into the mid to later morning hours until surface temperatures warmed above freezing.
The Miles City Airport reported 0.08 inches of ice at 3:06am. In addition, freezing rain and black ice were reported on roadways. Interstate I-94 from Miles City to Glendive, along with US 212 from Alzada to the Wyoming border were closed for a period of time. Multiple vehicle crashes were reported throughout the event.
