Event narrative

The entire zone remained in Severe(D2) drought through the month of December. The Elk Cooperative Observer reported just a trace of precipitation which was 0.70 inches below normal.

Wider weather episode

Little to no precipitation fell in December across southern New Mexico. Drought conditions generally remained unchanged for the region during the month with the south in Severe(D2) to Extreme(D3) drought and improving to no drought for portions of northern Otero and eastern Sierra counties.
