Event narrative

Wind chills as low as -50F were reported at the KIWD Gogebic-Iron County airport in Ironwood.

Wider weather episode

A long duration extreme cold every took place across the region starting the 18th and lasting into the morning of the 21st. An area of very cold high pressure worked in the Plains on the 18th and 19th and eventually sunk to the south into the Southern Plains by the morning of the 21st. The Northland didn't see the coldest air temperatures of the event being more on the periphery of the high, but did see extremely cold wind chills as low as -54F as the pressure gradient overhead prevented winds from dying off overnight.
