Event narrative

Heaviest snowfall report was a public report near Rocky Fork at 2300 feet elevation with 6.5 inches of snow. Broadcast media relayed multiple reports, including 4 inches of snow in Unicoi, 4 inches in Flag Pond, 3 to 4 inches in Erwin, and 5.5 inches at 2700 feet of elevation in Flag Pond.

Wider weather episode

A shortwave trough, embedded in a larger longwave upper trough, was the lifting source necessary to produce a light snow in the valley and ridges of northeastern Tennessee. Orographic lifting helped produce heavy snow in higher elevations of the mountains of East Tennessee.
