A trained spotter and a cocorahs observation both reported 6 inches new snow 4 miles North of East Helena during the daytime of the 3rd.
Wider weather episode
A moist southwesterly flow aloft overrunning a cold surface airmass across much of the region resulted in a period of moderate to heavy snow January 3rd and 4th. Snow amounts added up to around a foot in several lower elevation locations before the event concluded.
