The AWOS located at the Long Prairie Municipal Airport recorded several hours of extreme wind chills with a minimum recording of -47 degrees.

Wider weather episode

A series of cold fronts brought a frigid Canadian air mass and breezy northwest winds during January 17-21. This resulted in the coldest air for the region in nearly 4 years with temperatures from January 19-21 into the -10s to -30s F, and wind chill temperatures between -30 and -50 F.

The coldest wind chill temperatures favored west-central Minnesota. Long Prairie Municipal registered the coldest wind chill with -47F at 2355 on January 20, while Morris, Glenwood Municipal, and Alexandria Regional Airports all observed -46F during the afternoon on January 20.
