Dense Fog — Grand Valley, Colorado
2024-12-29 · Grand Valley, Colorado
Event narrative
Around 7:30AM local time, the KGJT ASOS at Grand Junction Regional Airport began reporting visibilities less than 1/4 mile. In addition, satellite imagery and road cameras provided by the Colorado Department of Transportation allowed for confirmation that the dense fog was more than just localized. Particularly, the dense fog was impacting the Interstate 70 corridor. This dense fog lingered into the afternoon hours before finally starting to lift before 1PM local time. No reports of injuries, fatalities, or damages were received.
Wider weather episode
As several weak systems moved through the area during the last week of 2024, they helped to create pools of rich moisture trapped in the lower elevation valleys. These pools of moisture condensed during the overnight period into widespread areas of dense fog. The lower elevation river valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado were mainly effected.
