Lake enhanced snowfall totals over a 24-hour period included 9.5 inches at Chassell, 7.8 inches at Quincy Hill, 7.5 inches at Painesdale, 7.3 inches at Hancock and 6.2 inches at Twin Lakes. Northwest winds gusting as high as 40 mph also caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow, resulting in whiteout conditions at times. Houghton-Keweenaw County Schools were closed on the 5th due to impacts from the lake enhanced snow and blowing snow.

Upper level disturbances moving through a cold air mass situated across Lake Superior set the stage for heavy lake enhanced snow over the northwest wind snow belts of Lake Superior from the 4th into the 5th.
