Event narrative

Lake enhanced snowfall amounts over a 24-hour period included 12 inches at Mount Arvon, 11 inches at Herman and two miles south of Baraga and 9 inches at L'Anse. Northwest winds gusting as high as 35 to 40 mph also caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow, resulting in whiteout conditions at times. Schools were closed throughout the county on the 5th due to impacts from the lake enhanced snow and blowing snow.

Wider weather episode

Upper level disturbances moving through a cold air mass situated across Lake Superior set the stage for heavy lake enhanced snow over the northwest wind snow belts of Lake Superior from the 4th into the 5th.
