Winter Weather — C & E Adams & Arapahoe Counties, Colorado
2025-01-09 · C & E Adams & Arapahoe Counties, Colorado
Event narrative
Strong wind gusts to 50 mph combined with snowfall led to the adverse driving conditions. An estimated 2 to 4 inches of snow fell according to CoCoRahs observations. Both directions of I-70 in eastern Colorado were closed for several hours due to blowing snow on Thursday afternoon.
Wider weather episode
Main impact was blowing and drifting snow across the plains of eastern Colorado where wind gusts to around 50 mph reduced visibility to less than a quarter mile at times. Snow did fall as well, but due to the wind gusts accurate measurements were very difficult to make by weather observers/spotters. The blowing snow cause I-70 to be closed from just east of Denver to the Kansas state line. Colorado State Patrol officials out of Limon said nearly all major highways between Burlington and E-470 near DIA are closed because of the weather. Side roads are in even worse shape and shouldn't be used to get around the closures.
