An estimated 3 to 6 inches of lake effect snow fell across southern Houghton County over a 24-hour period. North winds gusting over 35 mph at times also caused considerable blowing and drifting of snow, resulting in hazardous travel conditions.

Upper level disturbances moving through a cold air mass situated across Lake Superior set the stage for heavy lake enhanced snow over the northwest wind snow belts of Lake Superior from the 4th into the 5th.
