Event narrative

SNOW SQUALL. A snow squall allowed for a period of heavy snow, lowered visibilities, and breezy winds to occur on Interstate 80 in Montour County during the early morning hours of February 14, 2025. This snow squall produced slick roadways that resulted in an accident involving multiple commercial and passenger (estimated between seven to eight) vehicles. There were two fatalities and two injuries from this crash. A second traffic accident occurred in the backlog of traffic, with a vehicle under a tractor trailer, resulting in another fatality. The westbound lane of Interstate 80 was closed from the time of the incident through much of the day, with traffic being rerouted.

Wider weather episode

A low-level jet entrance region across western Pennsylvania, with moist westerly flow along the Alleghenies providing sufficient lift, allowed for snow showers to occur across northern and western portions of Pennsylvania during the early morning hours of February 14, 2025. Localized snow squalls occurred in an environment with marginally sufficient surface-based instability, mainly across the northern tier of Pennsylvania. A snow squall occurred during the early morning hours on Interstate 80 in Montour County, causing multiple accidents that resulted in two fatalities and two injuries.
